LEARN TO DANCE!

No Partner or Experience Necessary

WEEKLY ADULT DANCE CLASSES

TUESDAY 7PM

(No memberships, no lock-in contracts)

If you’ve never done any dancing before, then this Beginner’s Class is the place to start! Learn the basics of Ballroom, Latin, Street Latin and New Vogue partner dancing.

How the Beginner’s Class works

This weekly, one-hour Beginner’s Class, cycles through various Ballroom, Latin, Street Latin, and New Vogue dances (see below). This gives you a good overview of the various dances, and some basic steps from each.

In this class, you’ll generally begin by learning some steps on your own, usually standing in a line, side-by-side with the other students, before partnering up and practicing with a partner.

You’ll change dance partners every few minutes, so everyone dances with everyone.
You definitely do NOT need a partner to come along to any of our dance classes!

The hardest thing about these classes is WALKING IN THE DOOR the first time!

It’s the same for everyone – everyone is a bit nervous to begin with. And it was the same for all of us when we first started!

Feel free to make a time to come and meet us prior to your class, or just call to chat and say hello before coming along. Or simply turn up – everyone is very friendly!

Check out Shall We Dance below, and you’ll get the general gist

Street Latin

Street Latin includes a variety of “street” dances including Salsa, Argentine Tango, Bachata, Merengue, Zook, and more. These are more aimed at social club “lead and follow” dancing, although there are high level competitions and performances also.

In the Beginner’s Class you’ll learn the basics of 2 of the most popular – Salsa and Argentine Tango.

Below are some video examples.

Ballroom

Technically, Ballroom dancing (sometimes called “Modern”), consists of 5 dances – Modern Waltz, Slow Foxtrot, Quickstep, Tango (English) and Viennese Waltz. In the Beginner’s Class you will get an introduction to 2 of these – Modern Waltz and a dance called the “Rhythm Foxtrot”. Rhythm Foxtrot is a more basic version of Slow Foxtrot (which can be quite difficult for Beginner’s to get the hang of). Rhythm Foxtrot can be danced to a large variety of popular 4/4 time music, and can also be danced faster, giving beginner’s a taste of Quickstep.

So in this class you really get an introduction to Waltz, Foxtrot and Quickstep. The more difficult TRUE Slow Foxtrot, Quickstep, and the Viennese Waltz await you as you master the basics.

Below are some examples of what these dances can look like at the competitive level!

Latin

Latin Dancing (also called “Latin American”) also consists of 5 dances – Cha Cha, Rumba, Jive, Samba and Paso Doble. In the Beginner’s Class we concentrate on 2 – Cha Cha and Rumba.

Below are some examples of what these dances can look like at the competitive level!

New Vogue

New Vogue is an Australian style (also danced in New Zealand) of “sequence” dancing. This means all couples on the floor are dancing the same steps at the same time.

In Waltz, or Cha Cha etc., each couple dances either their own choreographed routine different to everyone else (as in DanceSport competition), or socially they are danced as “lead and follow” where the man (usually) decides which steps he is going to dance in which order (in other words, he “makes it up as he goes”). However, in New Vogue (or other “sequence” dances), everyone is dancing the same steps at the same time. Watch a high level example here!

There are 15 New Vogue dances. 5 are danced to Slow Foxtrot rythym – Merrilyn, Charmaine, Barclay Blues, Carousel and Excelsior Schottische. 2 are March Rhythm – Evening Three Step and Gypsy Tap. 3 are Tango Rhythm – Tangoette, La Bomba and Tango Terrific. And 5 are Viennese Waltz rhythm – Parma Waltz, Swing Waltz, Twilight Waltz, Lucille Waltz and Tracie Leigh Waltz.

In the Beginner’s Class we learn two of the easiest of the New Vogue dances – the Evening Three Step and the Gypsy Tap.

What next?!

Once you feel like you are getting the hang of the basics in the Beginner’s Class, there are a number of options. The usual progression is to enrol in the Bronze Accelerator Medal Course, where you will earn your Bronze Medal in Ballroom, Latin, Street Latin, and New Vogue. (Medals are like belts in Karate – you start at Bronze, then Silver, then Gold, and so on.)

You might also move into the Intermediate Latin & Ballroom dance classes. And some students will choose to have a crack at a few (or many!) DanceSport competitions.

How much?

Classes are 55 minutes. Just $18 per class with your 10 Class Pass, or $24 pay as you go (cash or card).
No need to book, just turn up. Or feel free to touch base prior, by phone or message.

What to wear?

Casual clothes that are comfortable to move and dance in.

Shoes

Shoes that are comfortable and that will swivel on the floor without being too sticky. Old sneakers with worn out soles are good, or sandshoes. Once you get serious, you can purchase a pair of dedicated dance shoes like those from Supadance.

What to bring

Most people like to bring a drink bottle.

When & where

The Beginner’s Class runs every Tuesday night at 7pm, and every Wednesday afternoon at 2pm, at the Spring Gully Hall. See timetable and map below.

5 star reviews

One of the best things ever I’ve done

A great place to enjoy a fun time in a social, no pressure, atmosphere. Wonderful instructors: Bron, Michelle, Foong, Liz, (and others) guide you whether you enjoy: social dancing, medals, or for those with bigger plans, competition. Not only do you learn to dance, but there are social evenings, an end of year party, and occasionally an unofficial Ice Cream Run after practice. One of the best things ever I've done.

Let's Dance Bendigo has exceeded my expectations by far, and unexpectedly transformed me from a raw beginner to a joyful midlife medal dancer! They’ve build an awesome dancing community filled with members of all age groups and skills levels. Their classes and frequent social events are absolute fun with excellent vibes and music. Let’s Dance Bendigo crew integrates everyone‘s individuality dancing development to cater for the raw beginner through to the goldstar performer, completely hassle free and without any lock in contracts. All dancing instructors and members are exceptionally friendly, inclusive and supportive. Let‘s Dance Bendigo has the added bonus of teaching and dancing in superb locations such as the Spring Gully and Strathdale community halls. I highly recommend dropping in for an hour of checking it out during the beginners classes. If I’d known it was so easy to match my full time professional working schedule, I’d joined a few many years ago! A big thanks to the group to create such a wonderful dancing community and many happy memories here in Bendigo!

…a wonderful, warm, fun atmosphere to learn to dance in

Bronwyn from Let’s Dance Bendigo is the most supportive, non-judgemental and patient dance teacher I’ve ever met. She’s happy to help you at any stage of your dancing, no matter your goals, with or without a dance partner. Bronwyn can teach basic level routines, all the way up to the highest levels to create Australian Champions, even if you possess two left feet! Bronwyn has a bright sunny welcoming disposition, and her enthusiasm never wanes. She has a very loyal group of pupils who would follow her anywhere and who are all also very welcoming. Bronwyn effortlessly creates a wonderful, warm, fun atmosphere to learn to dance in.
